Both the Q5 and Tiguan have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The Q5 has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The Tiguan’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the Q5. But it costs extra on the Tiguan.

Earlier warning of stopped traffic, traffic signals, dangerous road conditions, weather, or accidents, can keep driver's safer and prevent crashes. The Q5 has Car-to-X Services, a system that seamlessly communicates important warnings to the driver about impending danger, if they're available. The Tiguan doesn’t offer a system that can receive automated systems from infrastructure.

Both the Q5 and the Tiguan have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front and rear side-impact airbags, front seat center airbag, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, post-collision automatic braking systems, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and available around view monitors.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety does 40 MPH moderate front offset crash tests on new cars. In this updated test, results indicate that the Q5 is much safer than the Tiguan:

This distinction is based on its exceptional performance in IIHS’ rigorous battery of safety tests. Specifically, it earned a “Good” rating in the latest, more stringent moderate overlap front crash test, a “Good” result in the updated side impact test, and a “Good” score in the revised pedestrian crash prevention test. The Tiguan is not even a standard “Top Safety Pick” for 2025.

The Q5’s corrosion warranty is 5 years and unlimited miles longer than the Tiguan’s (12/unlimited vs. 7/100,000).

Audi pays for scheduled maintenance (up to 1 visits) on the Q5 for 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Volkswagen pays for maintenance for the Tiguan (3/30,000 vs. 2/20,000).

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Audi vehicles are more reliable than Volkswagen With 12 fewer problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, J.D. Power ranks Audi higher than Volkswagen.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ March 2026 Auto Issue reports that Audi vehicles are more reliable than Volkswagen vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Audi 3 places higher in reliability than Volkswagen.

The Q5’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid produces 67 more horsepower (268 vs. 201) and 88 lbs.-ft. more torque (295 vs. 207) than the Tiguan’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder. The Q5’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid produces 67 more horsepower (268 vs. 201) and 74 lbs.-ft. more torque (295 vs. 221) than the Tiguan’s optional 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder. The Q5’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid produces 37 lbs.-ft. more torque (295 vs. 258) than the Tiguan SEL R-Line Turbo’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid.

As tested in Motor Trend the Audi Q5 is faster than the Volkswagen Tiguan turbo 4 cyl.:

The Q5 has 2.7 gallons more fuel capacity than the Tiguan FWD’s standard fuel tank (17.2 vs. 14.5 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The Q5 has 1.6 gallons more fuel capacity than the Tiguan AWD’s standard fuel tank (17.2 vs. 15.6 gallons).

The Q5 has a tether attaching its gas cap to prevent its loss. The Tiguan’s gas cap isn’t tethered, so it can be left at a gas station if the driver forgets to screw the cap back in.

The Q5 offers a standard sequential manual gearbox (SMG). With no clutch pedal to worry about and a fully automatic mode, an SMG is much more efficient than a conventional automatic but just as easy to drive. The Tiguan doesn’t offer an SMG or a conventional manual transmission.

The Q5’s launch control uses engine electronics to hold engine RPM’s precisely in order to provide the most stable and rapid acceleration possible, using all of the available traction. The Tiguan doesn’t offer launch control.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Q5 has standard 18-inch wheels. Smaller 17-inch wheels are standard on the Tiguan.

Changing a flat tire near traffic can be dangerous and inconvenient. The run-flat tires standard on the Q5 can be driven up to 50 miles without any air pressure, allowing you to drive to a service station for a repair. The Tiguan doesn’t offer run-flat tires.

The Q5 offers an available driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads or off-road. The Tiguan’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

The Q5 Prestige has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The Q5’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The Tiguan doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the Q5 is 1.5 inches wider in the front and 1.3 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the Tiguan.

The Q5 Prestige handles at .88 G’s, while the Tiguan SE pulls only .81 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The Q5 Prestige executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.2 seconds quicker than the Tiguan SE (26.6 seconds @ .69 average G’s vs. 27.8 seconds @ .62 average G’s).

For greater off-road capability the Q5 has a 1.2 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the Tiguan (8.2 vs. 7 inches), allowing the Q5 to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The Q5 Prestige’s minimum ground clearance is 2.5 inches higher than on the Tiguan (9.5 vs. 7 inches).

The Q5 has .7 inches more front legroom, .7 inches more front shoulder room and .2 inches more rear shoulder room than the Tiguan.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Q5’s rear seats recline. The Tiguan’s rear seats don’t recline.

A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the Q5. The Tiguan doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

The Q5’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the Tiguan’s (4400 vs. 1500 pounds).

The engine in the Q5 is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the Tiguan. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The Q5 Premium Plus/Prestige has standard headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The Tiguan doesn’t offer headlight washers.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the Q5 to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Tiguan doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

The Q5’s standard rear and side view mirrors have an automatic dimming feature. These mirrors can be set to automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The Tiguan offers an automatic rear view mirror, but its side mirrors don’t dim.

The Audi Q5 has power folding mirrors that offer unparalleled convenience while maneuvering in tight places or parked. With the mirrors folded it’s easier to walk past and help prevent parking damage. The mirrors can be quickly unfolded when the driver is ready to leave. Power folding mirrors are only offered on the Tiguan SEL.

Compared to the Volkswagen Tiguan, the Audi Q5 eliminates the need for separate garage door openers and associated risks of losing, breaking, or having dead batteries with its standard integrated Homelink® universal remote controlled from the rear view mirror.

The Q5’s Park Assist Plus can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. Park Assist Plus will park and retrieve your car remotely: press a button and watch it park itself. This is ideal for tight locations. The Tiguan SEL’s automatic parking system does not offer parking by remote control.
